Unit 2: FUNCTIONAL GROUPS & TECHNOLOGIES

Introduction

A Functional Group is a grouping of technologies which perform a similar function. There are five (5) different Functional Groups from which the technologies used to build a system are chosen.

The five (5) Functional Groups are:

  • User Interface (Technologies U1–U6): Red
  • Collection and Storage/Treatment (Technologies (S1–S12): Yellow
  • Conveyance (Technologies C1–C7): Orange
  • (Semi-) Centralized Treatment (Technologies T1–T17): Green
  • Use and/or Disposal (Technologies D1–D12): Blue

Each technology within a given Functional Group is assigned a reference code with a single letter and number; the letter corresponds to the Functional Group (e.g. U for User Interface) and the number, going from lowest to highest, indicates approximately how resource intensive (i.e. economic, material and human) the technology is.

How to use the Technology Sheets

Technologies are defined as the specific infrastructure, methods, or services that are designed to contain, transform, or transport Products to another Functional Group. There are between 6 and 17 different technologies within each Functional Group. The Technology Information Sheets located in Unit 2 provide a detailed description of each technology identified within each System Template.

Usually, you have been gone through the System Templates before you decide to study the technologies used in the system approaches in greater detail for your own system design.

Every technology mentions in the right column the related system template and the (main) products which are treated by the technology – this makes it easy to jump back and forward while working on your own choice of technologies needed for your individual system template!
